You cannot, sir, take from me anything that I will more willingly part withal, except my life, except my life, except my life.
Act II, Scene 2 · Hamlet
Context
Hamlet tells Polonius he is welcome to take anything from him, then repeats the exception three times.
Analysis
The anaphora 'except my life' hammers the phrase into emphasis through sheer repetition. Yet the obsessive repeating also makes it sound less like a refusal and more like a fixation—Hamlet circles back to his life as if testing the idea of letting it go.
Essay Tip
Use this to argue that Hamlet is ambivalent about his own survival—the repeated exception draws attention to his life as something he is unsure he wants to keep, foreshadowing his later suicidal thoughts.
