Who's there?
Act I, Scene 1
Context
Barnardo arrives to relieve Francisco from guard duty on the castle battlements at midnight. Barnardo challenges Francisco with the first words of the play.
Analysis
This opening line reverses the expected protocol—Barnardo, the arriving guard, challenges first instead of Francisco, who is already on post. The inversion immediately creates unease and suggests that something has disturbed the normal order at Elsinore. The brevity of the question, just two words, makes the darkness and uncertainty feel physically close.
Essay Tip
Use this to argue that Shakespeare builds anxiety into the play's very first line—the wrong person asking 'Who's there?' tells us the guards are already rattled before we know why.
